I’m not much of a breakfast person, but Chris loves breakfast. I do like it on occasion on the weekends. So this morning, I opened my Restaurant.com app on my phone (LOVE this app, by the way) and found a restaurant in Waterloo that serves breakfast until 2pm, called Magee Diner. We only get to sleep in on the weekends, so if we do breakfast, it has to be a late breakfast.
So I printed out the Restaurant.com certificate and we got there at around 11:30am. There were quite a few cars in the parking lot, so we were surprised when we walked in and there were still lots of empty tables and no wait.
We were quickly seated by a woman at the front desk and we thought she was going to seat us at one of the tables in the main room, but she turned the corner and seated us in a booth like this:
My boyfriend is a big guy and he doesn’t like booths like this where the seats or table can’t be adjusted. He feels very uncomfortable in booths like this, so we asked her if we could sit at one of the regular tables. She sighed, and started pointing out “well that one is reserved… and this one is reserved..” and then she turned around and seated us at the table right behind where we were standing. She rudely said “the waitress over here just got slammed, so you’re going to have to wait to be served” and walked away. Chris and I just looked at each other. We sat down, and I watched the woman go back to the front desk and she started talking about us. I could see her making faces and saying “they wanted a table…” and her and the girl she was talking to both looked over at us.
Just moments later, our waitress came over. She was very nice and more than made up for the rude hostess. She quickly took our orders and brought us out our drinks.
It wasn’t long before our orders came out.
Now, before you see all the food we ordered, know this – we had to spend $30 in order to use the $15 Restaurant.com certificate. We typically do not order this much food for breakfast and whatever we did not finish we planned on bringing home.
So I ordered a belgian waffle, two orders of bacon, an english muffin and grapefruit juice.
Chris ordered their “Hungryman” breakfast, which had eggs, hash browns, sausage and french toast. He also ordered an english muffin, an extra side of sausage, orange juice and coffee.
It was a lot of food, I know!! Unfortunately, everything came out cold. Not one thing on our table was even warm. But by this time, the place was getting packed and we just wanted to eat and get out.
I will say this – the food was good. Really good, actually. It would have been better if it was hot, but it was really good, and they do give you big portions for the price.
Would we go back again? Yes. And I’m sure the next time we want breakfast out, we will probably go back. Or maybe we’ll try lunch or dinner there next time. And we hope the food is warm next time! It’s not a fancy diner by any means. So if you’re looking for a high end place, this isn’t it. But if you’re just looking for a decent meal at a decent price, you’ll probably like it.
This place seems to be very popular. When we left, there was a line of customers waiting to be seated. I also noticed a lot of customers getting called by their first names, so it appears they have a lot of locals who eat there a lot. And if you’re familiar with the territory, there’s really not a lot of places to eat here. There are more fast food joints than actual restaurants.
Our bill overall was $35.52 after tax. We used our $15 Restaurant.com gift certificate and ended up paying just $20.52 for the two of us (plus tip, of course). That is a great savings! If you are not using Restaurant.com, you are really missing out on some awesome savings! We use these all the time at various places – and there are restaurants nationwide!
