We have several dogs – 5 Chihuahuas, to be exact. And they are not just our “pets”, they are family members. Our sometimes yappy, very needy, very funny, and always loving little furry family members. When something goes wrong with one of them, it is heart breaking. In the past few years, we’ve lost two dogs to illnesses.
In 2011, our min-pin, Alexis, was diagnosed with diabetes, and for 2 years we had to give her three insulin shots a day. She had several stays in the animal hospital, was on lots of meds, and our vet bills were crazy. But we did whatever we had to, to keep her as healthy as we could. I needed her to live forever. ♥ She passed away in May 2013, at the age of 13.
Our next oldest dog, Sammy, was a Shih-Tzu/Pomeranian mixed breed. I thought this dog would live forever. Nothing ever seemed to phase him. He was never sick, and never acted like he didn’t feel well, despite having a tumor in his neck since he was a puppy. We had it checked when he was a pup, and was told it was just a “fatty tumor” and we had a biopsy done and was told it was benign. It never seemed to get any larger until the last few years of his life. It suddenly started to grow very large, very quickly. At one point it was the size of an orange. By the time it was diagnosed with cancer, it was too late. The vets said they could not operate because of where it was located. We were told, “it would be like kicking a hornet’s nest”. My Sammy passed away in May 2016, after losing a whopping 18 lbs.
Why am I telling you all of this? Because I’m kicking myself for not having pet insurance on our dogs. Our vet bills have been very high just between Sammy & Alexis, and I keep asking myself, what if? What if I had insurance on them – would they have gotten better treatment? Would they have lived longer?
Years ago, when pet insurance was a new thing, I had looked into getting it. But I decided not to purchase it for many reasons. At the time, it was not very affordable, it covered very little, and you couldn’t use it at any vet’s. We live in a very rural part of NY and none of the pet insurances were accepted at our veterinary hospitals.
But my, how things have changed over the years! Now you can purchase pet insurance through Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. They have been rated the #1 pet insurance now for 3 years in a row. They pay up to 90% of pet bills! You get unlimited lifetime benefits, and this insurance works with all licensed veterinarians. And, it’s not just for dogs – you can get insurance on your cats, too!
They have several different insurance options – you can choose your reimbursement level and annual deductible. For our one Chihuahua, Noah, the cheapest plan for him would be $20.68/month. That is very reasonable!
